| Members Can Plan for Winter Activities |
When the air begins to chill and the leaves start dropping from the trees, members begin to start thinking about other things to keep them busy during the colder months, long after their bikes are put away.
It's not that they don't love cycling but they are perhaps looking for a change in their routine. Since we all like the outdoors, there's no reason to lock ourselves away once the snow starts to fall. So there are ways for members to continue with their active livestyles by getting in some winter sporting activities.
And although these are not fully sanctioned events, the club continues with its standing winter tradition of informal, non-cycling get-togethers.
These events can come in the form of hikes, alpine and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, walks, or evening gatherings.
If you are looking forward to winter activities, we encourage members to keep the tradition going and start using @Chat to let people know what you would like to plan. If you haven't signed up with @Chat, we strongly suggest you do so to stay informed as to what's going on.
Winter plans may develop on the spur of the moment, so you have a better chance of seeing what's being planned by making sure you check for any new @Chat messages. |
The Sound Cyclists Bicycle Club newsletter may also contain specific information on all these winter gatherings. It may get a bit too cold to ride, but it's certainly never too cold to ski!
During the winter months, members have planned ski trips and it would be great for those who like ski or ride, or even for those who would love to learn, to get together and plan some of these outings. These trips can range from a one day excursion to a long weekend getaway. Some more ambitious members have even gone as far as organizing week-long trips out west.
For the single day excursions, there are a number of mountains within a few hours of the Fairfield county area, which allows plenty of time for skiing. These ski areas usually cover the range of skier/rider from beginner to expert and offer rental services, as well as other amenities. |
Then there's the social aspects of skiing - the traditional aprés ski gatherings. Heading toward the lodge is when the real fun begins. The winter months do have their advantages. Forget those summer regrouping stops with Gatorade and PowerBars and start thinking about cozying up to a blazing fireplace with hot soup, cocoa or a pint or two.
One of the biggest advantages of belonging to SCBC is the opportunities that are afforded to us in meeting people. If your winter plans include storing your bike away until the spring, consider spending some good times with friends you made during the cycling season. |
For those inclined for a less vertical challenge, cross country skiing, also known as Nordic skiing is a fine alternative and we have no shortage of members willing to spend the day in the woods or in the tracks. Besides all the fun, you can get a pretty good workout after doing this for a couple of hours or more. |
Snowshoeing has become very big and many places are offering the terrain for this growing activity. If you decide to purchase snowshoes, you'll find they are very reasonably prices. You many find place where they have organized tours or you can explore on your own. At any rate, you'll want to consider doing it with a group. And if the winter is as they predict, there will be plenty of snow to consider getting a nice workout snowshoeing.
Of course, there is always a good brisk walk or hike to get the blood flowing and members often get together for simple walks around interesting areas. There are plenty of wooded areas where you can get a lot closer to nature. After a nice workout, why not consider heading for a place to eat, drink and talk. |
| For those thinking about planning one of these outings, use @Chat as a great way to get people together. Your goal should be to plan for a successful experience for all. Because some trips require good detailed planning for a successful outing, please make sure you include all the information possible. |
| Please note that all rides, hikes, walks and ski trips in February and March are subject to winter weather. Check with the leader or organizer to make sure that the event is running. Standing Winter Rides are posted on the Ride Scheduling System and will continue until mid-March. Please make sure you always check that calendar for any changes. Our regular ride schedule will resume around the first weekend of Spring. |

| Ride for World Health - April and May 2012 |
Ever wanted to ride a bike across the country? Ever wanted to support health initiatives at home and abroad? Did you know that there is a great way to do both?
Ride for World Health is looking for riders for its 2012 team!
The Ride for World Health 2012 is a 3,700-mile bike ride across the United States that will take place during April and May of 2012. This will be the 7th annual medical student initiated event aimed at raising knowledge and awareness of global and domestic health issues through education, advocacy and fundraising.
In addition to biking, riders give a Coast-to-Coast lecture series on topics relating to global health, relevant domestic health, general safety, and health maintenance. We fundraise year round to support three chosen non-profit organizations in line with our overall mission. In previous years our fundraising campaigns have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for various global health initiatives. This year's beneficiaries are MANA nutrition, Louie's Kids, and Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL).
The Ride for World Health 2012 leadership is looking for individuals to join us who are motivated and interested in creating a dialogue for discussing global and domestic health needs. No extensive biking experience necessary! We can use both national team riders who will join us for the whole distance and portions team riders who can join us for part of the trip. For those who are not interested in riding but still want to help, we can use volunteers to help organize events and donations to help fundraising efforts.
Please consider this unique opportunity! For more information visit our website at www.rideforworldhealth.org or contact our 2012 recruiting chair at R4WH.recruitment@gmail.com. |
